  • When at work, simple stretching at your desk helps to - relieve pain, relieve stiffness, prevent posture problems, improve flexibility, decrease the risk of injuries and help to relieve physical stress. Also, after each hour of work, change tasks for at least 5 minutes.
  • A sure-fire way to improve bone strength is by including calcium in your diet. Foods that includes a good source of calcium is dairy products, vegetables (such as broccoli, spinach, peas), tofu and salmon. Also Vitamin D helps your body to absorb calcium better - so remember to spend some time in the sun to get your daily dose of Vitamin D.
  • Back pain can be caused by imbalances of the muscles surrounding it. This can be due to incorrect posture, or long periods of sitting/standing. Exercise can do wonders when it comes to relieving back pain. Increasing your core strength and flexibility provide better stabilization of the spine.
  • Several of you would know the harmful effects of smoking. Here are some tips on how to quit: Make a list of all the reasons why you should quit smoking, surround yourself with positive people and use them as support and identify places and people who make you want to smoke and try and eliminate them for the time-being.
  • People with arthritis commonly feel stiff when they first wake up in the morning and can cause discomfort and pain. Some tips to deal with morning stiffness: Sleep in a position that supports your joints, try and keep your room at a warm temperature and do some simple exercises in bed before getting up.
  • Heartburn, also known as acid indigestion is a burning sensation in the chest. Tips on preventing heartburn: Place 6 to 9-inch blocks under the legs at the head or your bed to raise it, try to eat at least 2 to 3 hours before lying down and Avoid tight clothes and tight belts.
  • Cooking tips on lowering cholesterol levels: Trim all visible fat from meat before cooking, Broil or grill rather than pan-fry meats, Eat chicken and turkey rather than duck and goose, which are higher in fat and limit processed meats such as sausage, bologna, salami and hot dogs.
  • Maintain a normal body weight by eating an appropriate number of calories and exercising for at least 30 minutes, five days per week. Obese people (with and without known gallstones), who are planning a rapid weight-loss programme should be supervised by a healthcare provider, and may require treatment with oral bile acids to prevent gallstones from developing during weight loss.
  • Weight loss tip: Eat slower, taste and savor the food. This gives the digestive system time to send the ‘full’ signal to the brain, to help reduce overeating.
  • Tips to get a good night’s sleep: Drinking milk before bed ensures you won’t go to bed hungry, avoid smoking and consuming alcohol 5-6 hours before sleep, sleep on a comfortable bed where your legs can be stretched and ensure the room is clean and well ventilated.
